So, we’re moving to the country (close in one week!). Was hoping to be out far enough to see the Milky Way, but looks like that may have been wishful thinking. Check out this site. We’re moving from the fringe of red to the yellow zone. Definitely will see more stars, but not sure if it will be dark enough to catch the Milky Way...

Well that proves it. I’ve had the thought that Michigan’s international dark sky park was bullshit. But I was wrong. My dad’s house growing up was in the blue and the park is in the grey. Its the little peninsula sticking out between Beaver Island and Mackinaw City.
Doesn’t help you out, but I was curious.

That is a cool tool. I live in a dark green/light green area, and I can definitely see the milky way on clear nights. I can also see the glow from even a small town (<5000 people) to my south west, though.

Probably 3 miles? But I get some light pollution from the Strip Mall District which is northwest of town, so due west of me. And it keeps growing, but at least most places now put in down-facing LED streetlights instead.
Semi-related: every time I fly into or out of an airport at night, I marvel at the seemingly endless areas of the world that are lit with streetlights, and just shake my figurative head at all the things we do in our house to try and save energy. I shut off the lights when I leave the room, and here are thousands of miles of ROADS lit all the time, dusk to dawn. /end rant

Sad, but a lot of Asia is like that. Most of Russia, most of China, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and others. There is just a lot of mountainous area and farming. Can’t be developed like here

Especially sad in N. Korea, because of how oppressed the people are and they’re so close to freedom and prosperity in their neighbors to the south. I don’t think it’s sad to live far away from civilization; I’d honestly prefer it in many ways.

Not too much. My wife is the actual photographer in our family. I have a good eye, but take pretty much all my pictures with my phone. She actually high end gear. I tried to snap a picture of the Milky Way with one of her cameras using idiot settings. It was a lot more visible than it is in the photo.
That picture was taken on the edge of a wilderness area in the middle of nowhere northern Arizona.

Trees picking up light from the fire, I’m guessing? Our eyes truly are amazing instruments... I’ve taken some decent Milky Way photos with a good camera, a tripod and a fairly long exposure, in the middle of nowhere Colorado.

Definitely, and I don’t think it’s possible just yet to match it. Clearly, low light performance of sensors in recent years has gotten amazing - surpassing what the human eye can see, but the eye’s ability to adjust “exposure” on the fly and build a composite picture in our brain of everything is hard to replicate (in camera, anyway - HDR and combining multiple exposures can get close).

I have this theory that optics is one of the main driving forces behind the intellectual and philosophical advancements that have occured since the Renaissance. Telescopes completely revolutionized how we saw ourselves in regards the to heavens and microscopes did the same for how we understand where we fit in here on earth. Light, it’s an amazing thing.

Nice. When we were in Sedona for a long weekend this summer (for our anniversary), late one night my wife had already fallen asleep, and I went to sit out on the back porch of our rental. It was a full moon, backlighting the red rocks so they were black against the not-quite-black sky. There was a cool breeze, and since it was well after midnight, traffic was pretty much non-existent. It was so quiet that I could hear the drums from a pow wow that must have been going on miles away. The drumming would swell up and down, and every once in a while, there’d be a break and a chorus of hoots and howls would break out. I must have sat there and listened in silence for well over an hour. It was all I could do not to howl back in reply...

I had a pretty similar experience on the last night of our road trip. We camped out at Lee’s Ferry surrounded by red cliffs. I sat up late into the night with my dog listening to the Colorado River and the coyotes.
Reminds me I need to write my last story about that trip.
